As we step into the new year, we take a moment to reflect on an extraordinary 2023. It's been a journey marked by new releases, community growth, and defining moments that have shaped the launch of Bacalhau. These experiences have not only driven our technology forward but also strengthened the spirit of collaboration and innovation that is so important for establishing a distributed platform that can be used by everyone.
Looking Back
2023 has been a big one for Bacalhau, starting at the Compute Over Data Summit where we shared our vision and listened to attendees help us understand what their biggest issues were with data and distributed compute. Next came, the launch of Bacalhau 1.0, where we we able to add powerful new features and set a foundation for everything that followed.
From the release of 1.0, we’ve kept to a quarterly release schedule, first releasing Bacalhau 1.1 in September, and Bacalhau 1.2 in December, doing our best to listen to our users at each step along the way. By integrating GPU support and introducing pluggable executors among other advancements, we've significantly amplified its power and adaptability. It's not merely about adding features; it's about pioneering a tool that empowers users to tackle tomorrow's challenges with today's technology.
Our public network hit a remarkable milestone, passing 1.5 million jobs. But our vision extends beyond just scale. We've demonstrated real-world use-cases where Bacalhau slashes compute costs by up to 99%. Whether it's optimizing log processing, advancing edge ML, or managing distributed fleets, our goal transcends the statistics. It’s about democratizing technology, making powerful tools accessible and affordable for everyone, and driving a new era of efficiency and innovation.
Innovating Together: Partnerships and Growth
This year was as much about community as it was about technology. We kick-started collaboration with a hackathon and strengthened our industry presence by becoming a Google build partner. Another critical moment was securing $7.5 million in Seed funding, with General Catalyst, Hetz Ventures, and Array Ventures. Their investment not just enables us to continue on our journey; it's a vote of confidence in the vision and technology.
Deploying Bacalhau with the U.S. Navy on remote vessels was yet another great milestone, and a proof of concept on the impact of Bacalhau.
Last but not least, one thing that really fills us with pride is the surge in our community - growing by over 200%. It's this community, vibrant and passionate, that truly believes in our work and pushes us to keep innovating. Their support is the backbone of our progress and a constant reminder of why we do what we do.

Commercial Support
While Bacalhau is open-source software, the Bacalhau binaries go through the security, verification, and signing build process lovingly crafted by Expanso.
