A lot goes into a Bacalhau Network - and I don’t mean just the time and effort that many of us spend developing what we think is the bleeding edge of Distributed Computing - I mean, literally, there are a lot of parts that make up a Bacalhau network.
With compute and requester nodes, various job types, tasks, schedulers, CLI, SDKs and devtools, it can be a little overwhelming - especially when you’re first starting out. Figuring out where to begin and learning how everything connects can take some time. That’s the nature of distributed computing - lots of things happening in lots of places!
Still, we want Bacalhau to be as straightforward to use and understand as flipping a switch. And to that end, we’re introducing Bacalhau Shorts.
No, it’s not a new clothing line! It’s a series of short explainer videos that we’ll be rolling out over the next few weeks and months. We know a lot of people like to learn visually these days, and Bacalhau’s concepts are often easier to grasp when you can see how the different parts of the network interact.
The First Video
Our first video is a quick 90-second breakdown of the difference between a requester node and a compute node, and how jobs are distributed across the network..
You can check it out here!
What’s next?
In the next Bacalhau Short, we’ll be covering how a requester node decides which compute nodes to send jobs to, and how they handle unreliable network conditions.
We’d love to hear what you think, and most importantly, what concepts you’d like us to cover in the future!
Some of the things we’re thinking about right now are:
How do Bacalhau jobs interact with Docker networking?
How do compute nodes recover from unexpected reboots?
The order of precedence that different timeouts take in a Bacalhau Network
What is a storage provider?
What does a job cycle look like?

By the way…
The Expanso Team will be at the LF Energy Summit in Brussels next week. If you’re attending, or just in the Brussels area on September 5th, we’re running a “Side Bar” event in the evening.
We’d love for you to join us! And, yes, the beers are on us! Come and tell us what you think of the short; what you’re working on; what you’d like to see more of? Come by to chat about the shorts, what you’re working on, or anything else on your mind.
Everyone’s welcome, so fill in the form for details and drop by to say hello!
Get Involved!
We welcome your involvement in Bacalhau. There are many ways to contribute, and we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to us at any of the following locations.
Commercial Support
While Bacalhau is open-source software, the Bacalhau binaries go through the security, verification, and signing build process lovingly crafted by Expanso. You can read more about the difference between open-source Bacalhau and commercially supported Bacalhau in our FAQ. If you would like to use our pre-built binaries and receive commercial support, please contact us!
