Bacalhau Updates - December 2022
Thank you for a great 2022! Welcome to the final monthly Bacalhau newsletter of 2022!
As we approach the end of the year, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our community. It's been great to see you at our events, using our products, and giving us feedback. We are grateful for your engagement and contribution to our success in 2022.
As we gear up for the holiday season, we wanted to share a few of our notable achievements from the past year.
🔦 Product highlights Bacalhau in 2022
We wrote the first line of code in February, and now we are not only live and in production, but we have also released Bacalhau Beta in November! With this release, Bacalhau offers:
Simplified parallel data processing on 100 TB+ datasets
Reuse of existing tools - no rewriting your Python, R, Rust… even bash. Just deploy.
Dramatically decreased network latency for processing.
Truly serverless execution - just specify your job
Native accelerator support with a variety of different GPUs
Native IPFS/Filecoin support
WASM support - it can deterministically run WASM code, and we have a job pipeline
We have lots more planned too, read more on Bacalhau's long-term vision and roadmap!
🤝 Connecting with our Developer Community
We are constantly amazed by the creativity and innovation of our community and developers at Bacalhau. In 2022, we saw an incredible array of community contributions and use cases for our products that exceeded all of our expectations!
Wilman and his team built the best sustainability use-case, and his team on hypertally — decentralized dMRV platform (Digital measurement, reporting, and verification) for carbon capture projects (very well done!) 🌳🌴🌲
Antonio and Federico built Wiki-IPFS project to search CID/hashes of the files on IPFS via Bacalhau 🔍
Josh Klopfenstein made the world's first decentralized calculator Goldberg calculator, on Bacalhau 🍬

🎙 Our Favorite Compute over Data Talks of 2022
We might be biased, but our favorite presentation was our own
David Aronchick's talk on Bacalhau State of the Union with 8 live demos, including a LIVE demo on Stable Diffusion! If these demos weren't convincing enough to try out Bacalhau and you want to know "What is and Why" Bacalhau, then watch Revolutionizing the Big Data Age With Compute over Data.
The talk on "Growing the Bacalhau Network: Project Update & FIL+ Incentives for SPs" was presented by our engineers, Luke & Kai.
Simon & Enrico, our engineers, gave another talk on "WASM & Pipeline Support in Bacalhau".
🛰 Growing our Partner Ecosystem
In this past year, the Bacalhau project has made great strides in building partnerships with a diverse range of organizations, both traditional Web2 and innovative Web3. We are excited to announce that we are partnering with:
The team at Blocz and City of Las Vegas to deliver decentralized compute and storage for the City of Las Vegas public safety use cases.
The Web3 team LabDAO is building the engine behind their LabExchange offering to use Bacalhau for batch bioinformatics pipeline.
As we look ahead to 2023, we are eager to expand our partner ecosystem even further. We are focused on collaborating with research universities, non-profit organizations, etc. that are archiving large datasets on Filecoin for enterprise (commercial) use cases. We look forward to continuing to grow and innovate with our partners in the coming year.
❄️ Happy Holidays
We hope you have a wonderful holiday season, and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the new year. From all of us at Bacalhau, happy holidays!
🎶 Bacalhau Twelve Days of Christmas
On the twelfth day of Christmas
My true love gave to me
Twelve distributed compute nodes,
Eleven distributed storage nodes,
Ten smart contracts,
Nine decentralized apps,
Eight consensus algorithms,
Seven distributed ledger blocks,
Six data shards,
Five Byzantine protocols,
Four fault-tolerant servers,
Three IPFS nodes,
Two Filecoin miners,
And a Bacalhau compute network for me.
